Bikram Choudhury began his study of yoga at age three. By the time he was thirteen, he was the youngest-ever National Yoga Champion of India. He held the title until his Guru, Bishnu Ghosh*, asked him to forgo this competition so that others might have a chance.

Bikram went on to pursue an athletic career as a marathon runner and weight-lifter where he set world records and competed in the 1964 Olympic games in Tokyo. At age twenty, an accident crushed his knee, severely crippling him and he was told that he would never walk again. However, with the guidance of his guru and the practice of yoga, he was healed.

In 1965, while conducting research sponsored by the United Nations at Tokyo University, Bikram perfected his comprehensive yoga series. He specifically tailored it for the western culture, to improve the human condition mentally and physically.

Recognized as the most knowledgeable and accomplished Hatha Yoga Master of the last half of the 20th Century, Bikram teaches his method all over the world and has been bringing improved health and happiness to millions for over forty years.
